Strength

Every day we experience the uncertainty, risk & emotional exposure that define what it means to be vulnerable or to dare greatly. Brené Brown dispels the cultural myth that vulnerability is a weakness & shares that it is our most accurate measure of courage & strength. She beautifully explains how vulnerability is both the core of difficult emotions like fear or grief & the birthplace of love, belonging, joy, empathy, innovation & creativity. She writes, “when we shut ourselves off from vulnerability, we distance ourselves from the experiences that bring purpose, happiness & meaning to our lives.”

Daring Greatly is not about winning or losing. It’s about courage. In a world where “never enough” dominates & feeling afraid has become second nature, vulnerability is subversive. Uncomfortable. Even a little dangerous at times. Without question, putting ourselves out there means there’s a far greater risk of getting criticised or feeling hurt. But, when we step back & examine our lives, we find that nothing is as uncomfortable, dangerous & hurtful as standing on the outside of our lives & wondering what it would be like if we had the strength to step into the arena – whether it’s an important business decision or a creative project. Daring Greatly is a practice & a powerful new vision for letting ourselves be seen. It’s about our strength, our vulnerability, our compassion, about who we really are.

Defined as being in the zone, a mental state in which we are fully immersed in a feeling of energised focus, fluidity, creativity & joy. An experience of effortlessness & limitlessness.

In essence, the philosophy of flow is about finding peace, joy & fulfilment in the process of living, rather than solely focusing on achieving external goals. It’s about embracing the now & finding intrinsic motivation which can lead to greater purpose, creativity, happiness & satisfaction. Flow builds belief, compassion & resilience as it involves being fully present in the moment. The beautiful, mindful philosophy of flow can be found in Eastern traditions like the Zen Buddhism of Japan, Wu Wei of Taoism in China & the Indian concept of Samyama.

“Where energy flows, whatever you’re focusing on grows. Success like happiness cannot be pursued. It must ensue as the unintended side effect of one’s personal dedication to a course greater than oneself. A frequently mentioned dimension of flow is that while it lasts, one is able to let go of the challenging aspects of life to experience inner harmony & beauty in the moment”- Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi.

Mountains

The blog will pick a word of the week, to share & explore the selected word. Here’s an expression for the word – mountains. “It is not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves” – Sir Edmund Hillary.

Why do people go to the mountains? Not everyone who goes to the mountains is feeling gratified. Some maybe healing. Some maybe hiding, tired of sharing that they are okay. Some wish for silence because life is too loud. Some seek simplicity because everything feels so complicated. Some are looking for peace that they can’t find in their environment. Some seek a passion pursuit, a challenge while others look forward to some fun & playfulness. And yes, some are truly in love with nature. The dirt, the sweat & the stars seem so inviting. They feel truly alive out there. The remoteness & natural beauty of the mountains provide solace, a soulful space for relaxation & reflection. The vibrancy, vastness, immensity of the mountains inspires a spirit of humility & tranquility.

To many, it’s not just about the view. It’s about breathing again. To just be. To feel inspired or empowered by spirituality & mindfulness. One trail at a time. One campsite at a time. One quiet escape at a time. So, when we see someone walking into the wild mountains, they may not be looking for an adventure. They might be looking for themselves. For others, mountain activities bring shared experiences, people & purpose together, whether it’s hiking with friends, camping with family or volunteering for a conservation project. The mountain knows!

“Somewhere between the bottom of the climb & the summit lies the answer to the mystery, why do we climb? The best view comes after the hardest climb. The earth & the sky, the woods & the fields, the lakes & the rivers, the mountains & the sea are all excellent school masters, they teach some of us more than what we could ever learn from books. Climb the mountain not to plant your flag, but to embrace the challenge, to enjoy nature & to behold the view. Climb it so you can see the world, not so the world can see you.”

Although I deeply love the oceans, deserts & other wild landscapes, it is only the mountains that beckon me with an irresistible magnetic pull to walk deeper & deeper into their beauty, serenity & the spirit of adventure. They keep me continuously wanting to know more, feel more, see more.

Mountains. They always capture our intrigue, imagination & awe. Majestic. Mountains naturally command respect for their gorgeousness, glory & greatness. From the top, we can see beautiful, vibrant stretches of natural landscapes & amazing diversity. Both tranquil & tantalising. Mountains symbolise beauty, vision, resilience, an ability to rise above, to see beyond the immediate. Inspire us to be grateful, to witness life from unique perspectives, to see the bigger picture, to pursue our passion, to overcome challenges, to move forward with faith. “Great things happen when then men & mountains meet” – William Blake.

Even from a distance, the magnificent mountains remind us of how humble we are as compared to our infinite universe, which comes as a wonderful & welcome relief. Their presence points out that it is okay to feel a little vulnerable, to just be. As they rise up from the earth to disappear in the clouds, they appear ethereal. Surreal & spiritual.

As we climb, their enigmatic energy is undeniably delightful & enthralling. Magical, misty blue glacial lakes are just heavenly. Their marvellous waterfalls, mighty rivers flow effortlessly to connect us with a higher source of understanding, the love of nature, joy & compassion. I always return from the mountains feeling rejuvenated, hopeful & enthused with creative ideas. My second home. “The mountains are calling & I must go” – John Muir.
