Mountains

The blog will pick a word of the week, to share & explore the selected word. Here’s an expression for the word – mountains. “It is not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves” – Sir Edmund Hillary.

Why do people go to the mountains? Not everyone who goes to the mountains is feeling gratified. Some maybe healing. Some maybe hiding, tired of sharing that they are okay. Some wish for silence because life is too loud. Some seek simplicity because everything feels so complicated. Some are looking for peace that they can’t find in their environment. Some seek a passion pursuit, a challenge while others look forward to some fun & playfulness. And yes, some are truly in love with nature. The dirt, the sweat & the stars seem so inviting. They feel truly alive out there. The remoteness & natural beauty of the mountains provide solace, a soulful space for relaxation & reflection. The vibrancy, vastness, immensity of the mountains inspires a spirit of humility & tranquility.

To many, it’s not just about the view. It’s about breathing again. To just be. To feel inspired or empowered by spirituality & mindfulness. One trail at a time. One campsite at a time. One quiet escape at a time. So, when we see someone walking into the wild mountains, they may not be looking for an adventure. They might be looking for themselves. For others, mountain activities bring shared experiences, people & purpose together, whether it’s hiking with friends, camping with family or volunteering for a conservation project. The mountain knows!

“Somewhere between the bottom of the climb & the summit lies the answer to the mystery, why do we climb? The best view comes after the hardest climb. The earth & the sky, the woods & the fields, the lakes & the rivers, the mountains & the sea are all excellent school masters, they teach some of us more than what we could ever learn from books. Climb the mountain not to plant your flag, but to embrace the challenge, to enjoy nature & to behold the view. Climb it so you can see the world, not so the world can see you.”

Although I deeply love the oceans, deserts & other wild landscapes, it is only the mountains that beckon me with an irresistible magnetic pull to walk deeper & deeper into their beauty, serenity & the spirit of adventure. They keep me continuously wanting to know more, feel more, see more.

Mountains. They always capture our intrigue, imagination & awe. Majestic. Mountains naturally command respect for their gorgeousness, glory & greatness. From the top, we can see beautiful, vibrant stretches of natural landscapes & amazing diversity. Both tranquil & tantalising. Mountains symbolise beauty, vision, resilience, an ability to rise above, to see beyond the immediate. Inspire us to be grateful, to witness life from unique perspectives, to see the bigger picture, to pursue our passion, to overcome challenges, to move forward with faith. “Great things happen when then men & mountains meet” – William Blake.

Even from a distance, the magnificent mountains remind us of how humble we are as compared to our infinite universe, which comes as a wonderful & welcome relief. Their presence points out that it is okay to feel a little vulnerable, to just be. As they rise up from the earth to disappear in the clouds, they appear ethereal. Surreal & spiritual.

As we climb, their enigmatic energy is undeniably delightful & enthralling. Magical, misty blue glacial lakes are just heavenly. Their marvellous waterfalls, mighty rivers flow effortlessly to connect us with a higher source of understanding, the love of nature, joy & compassion. I always return from the mountains feeling rejuvenated, hopeful & enthused with creative ideas. My second home. “The mountains are calling & I must go” – John Muir.

Read the Philosophical Perspectives On Music by Wayne Bowman. Explores the diverse historic accounts of the universal nature, value & the idea of music. Highlights music’s emotional expressiveness & the vibrant ways in which music may be understood. Is music abstract or organised sound? Since there’re many examples of organised sounds that are not music like human speech & machines, is it too broad a classification? What is the relationship between music & our mind?

As we define it, “music is any event intentionally produced or organised to be heard & either have some basic musical feature such as pitch, rhythm or be listened to for such features?” It shares the importance of mathematical algorithms, precise structures, systematic organisation & the significance of creative aesthetics to music – lyricism, style, emotiveness, innovation, playfulness & soulfulness? From pre-Socratic Greeks to idealism & beyond, it beautifully shares what music truly is, how it works, the incredible impact & inclusivity it creates. What does music mean to you? Fascinating.

Where words fail, music speaks! It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, joy to the heart, flight to the imagination & a charm to life. “Music expresses that which cannot be put into words & that which cannot remain silent. Sometimes, music is not in the notes, but in the silence between” – Mozart. After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music.

It’s the most profound language of love with an incredible power to heal, to bring people together. “Music is my refuge. Occasionally, I crawl into the cozy spaces between the notes. The most exciting rhythms seem unexpected & complex, the most beautiful melodies seem simple & inevitable. Everything in our infinite universe has a rhythm, everything dances” – Maya Angelou.

Philanthropy

The blog will pick a word of the week, to share & explore the selected word. Here’s an expression for the word – philanthropy. It means true generosity in all its forms, defined as giving the gifts of time, talent & treasure to promote the welfare of our animal life, our people & our planet.

Philanthropy is often associated with selfless acts of kindness, but what if we were told that doing good can benefit us too? Giving back to others has a profound impact on our own mental, emotional & physical health. Research reveals that people who engage in acts of kindness or compassion experience a surge in endorphins, which are natural mood boosters. Acts of generosity can also trigger positive brain chemicals like serotonin, responsible for elevating our mood & oxytocin, which makes us feel connected to others. Additionally, giving can help reduce stress, improve our sleep quality, boost our self esteem & self worth.

A positive work culture that encourages philanthropy can increase empathy, passion, productivity & job satisfaction. Even doing just one good deed can lead to an increased sense of happiness & gratitude. Thinking about what we’ve given to others can be a powerful motivator, a source of strength. Together, let’s make a difference in our community, our world to experience the joy, gratefulness & fulfilment that comes with doing good.

But, if the drop were not there, the ocean would be missing something. Love cannot remain by itself, it has no meaning. Love has to be put into action & that action is service” – Mother Teresa.
