Río (Spanish)

The blog will pick a word of the week, to share & explore the selected word. Here’s an expression for the word – Río (Spanish).

Río means the river in Spanish. The philosophy of a river can be understood as a metaphor for life, evolution, identity, compassion, healing, serenity & beauty. The water is constantly moving, yet we still give the river a name & think of it as one continuous thing. This raises a classic philosophical question – if everything about something changes, what makes it remain the same thing? It also represents impermanence. We cannot hold onto moments, identities or circumstances. Hence, being fully present in the moment truly matters.

There is also a message about direction & acceptance. A river encounters rocks, bends, obstacles like drought, but it does not feel defeated. It courageously finds a way around, gradually re-shaping its path. So, the river suggests that strength isn’t always resistance, it can be adaptation or evolution. “A river cuts through rocks not because of its power, but because of its persistence” – James Watkins. It reminds us that becoming is more important than remaining. Inspiring.

A river changes constantly, yet retains a recognisable core value, purpose & continuity. It generously sustains life & communities, without expecting anything in return. “The river has great wisdom & whispers its secrets to the hearts of men” – Mark Twain. Perhaps, a river has no need to hurry. It simply flows. It reminds us that life is not necessarily about reaching the end as quickly as possible, but about moving gracefully through each moment while accepting that the landscape will continually change.

Being like the river is adapting without losing ourself, moving without needing to control everything, accepting that the journey itself is part of what gives us joy, beauty, focus & meaning. A river shares that moving forward does not require knowing the entire path. It requires dreams, determination, belief & faith. Be hope. Be water. Be movement.
