The blog will pick a word of the week, to share & explore the selected word. Here’s an expression for the word – serendipity. Defined as the occurrence of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way. Often used to describe a lucky coincidence, especially one that brings something delightful without being planned. Serendipity is an amazing concept that refers to the unexpected discovery of something valuable or pleasant while not specifically looking for it. Happy accidents or moments, where fortune seems to smile unexpectedly. The discovery happens randomly while we are doing something else or looking for something entirely different. Our ability to recognise the value in the unexpected is a crucial part of any serendipitous experience. We often retroactively assign importance to unexpected events, weaving them into a narrative that makes sense of our lives.
Penicillin was discovered by Alexander Fleming when he noticed mould killing bacteria in a petri dish that he had accidentally left out. The microwave oven was invented when a scientist noticed a candy bar melting in his pocket near radar equipment. Twitter began as a side project at Odeo, a podcasting company. When Apple launched iTunes podcast support, Odeo pivoted. An internal hackathon created Twitter, which eventually eclipsed the original company. In 1895, Wilhelm Röntgen was experimenting with cathode rays when he noticed an unusual glow from a nearby fluorescent screen. He had discovered X-rays, completely by accident.
Even science doesn’t always follow logic. Often, break-throughs happen through improvisation, mistakes & surprises. That’s pure serendipity. Discovery, innovation or invention is not linear. Serendipity plays a vital role in both scientific progress & human understanding.
Sometimes, innovators or creators stumble upon new ideas, fresh perspectives or life changing inspiration while working on something totally unrelated. Some see serendipity as the universe’s way of rewarding openness, spontaneity, curiosity, humility & presence. It encourages embracing the unexpected & being grateful for the beauty in life’s surprises. Meaning often emerges from chaos or chance. Serendipity is being in harmony with the flow of the universe.
Philosophically, serendipity challenges our desire for control & predictability. It suggests that not everything meaningful in life comes from rational planning or logic. Sometimes, randomness & playfulness brings the most value. Naturally, life has limited or no inherent structure. Meaning is created through experiences. Serendipitous moments often feel deeply meaningful.
Cultivating a serendipitous mindset means training ourselves to be more observant, curious, spontaneous, exploratory, reflective & responsive to the unexpected. Above all, being fully present in the moment. Serendipity thrives in cross pollination, when different beliefs, unique insights, people or fields collide. Fascinating.
