The blog will pick a word of the week, to share & explore the selected word. Here’s an expression for the word – serendipity. Defined as the occurrence of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way. Often used to describe a lucky coincidence, especially one that brings something delightful without being planned. Serendipity is an amazing concept that refers to the unexpected discovery of something valuable or pleasant while not specifically looking for it. Happy accidents or moments, where fortune seems to smile unexpectedly.
The discovery happens randomly while we are doing something else or looking for something entirely different. Our ability to recognise the value in the unexpected is a crucial part of any serendipitous experience. We often retroactively assign importance to unexpected events, weaving them into a narrative that makes sense of our lives.
Cultivating a serendipitous mindset means training ourselves to be more observant, curious, spontaneous, exploratory, reflective & responsive to the unexpected. Above all, being fully present in the moment. Serendipity thrives in cross pollination, when different beliefs, unique insights, people or fields collide. “There’ll always be serendipity involved in discovery” – Jeff Bezos.

Read Serendipity: It Doesn’t Happen By Accident. How do breakthroughs really happen? Why do some people, places & organisations generate transformative ideas, while others with the same resources fall short? David Cleevely – telecoms pioneer, deep tech investor & one of the architects of the Cambridge tech cluster offers a powerful new perspective on innovation. Shares how breakthroughs emerge from the interplay of networks, feedback loops, well designed environments & serendipity.
Drawing on a career of founding & funding over 60 companies, including the billion dollar biotech firm Abcam, sparked by a single dinner conversation, Cleevely explains how to build systems that increase the odds of discovery. From Silicon Valley, government policy to startup growth, we learn about what makes some eco-systems flourish.
Why do some digital platforms inadvertently reduce serendipity or why do the most innovative systems often appear inefficient? We discover how the convergence of technical capability, contextual insight & operational know how drive the biggest breakthroughs. Great understanding of the structures that make lightning insights more likely. Whether we’re an entrepreneur, policymaker, researcher or leader, Serendipity is a practical guide to design for discovery when the future is uncertain & breakthrough innovation is essential. Inspiring.
