Chandro Tomar nicknamed Shooter Dadi (grandmother) is an octogenarian sharp shooter from India.
Since learning to shoot in 1999, already in her 60’s, she’s attained national fame as an accomplished shooter. Won more than 30 national championships. Referred to as the oldest woman sharpshooter in the world.
Tomar is illiterate but a learner when it comes to sharpshooting and basic English. Her husband proudly encourages her along with the family. Tomar has 5 children, 12 grand-children.
She began learning to shoot by chance. Her grand-daughter wanted to learn at a local Rifle Club. She was shy to go alone to an all-boys shooting club. Wanted her grandmother to accompany. At the range, Tomar took a pistol when she couldn’t load it, began to shoot at target. Her 1st shot resulted in a bull’s eye hit.
Club’s coach was surprised to see her shoot so skilfully. Inspired her to join the club for formal training. “She has ultimate skills, a steady hand, a sharp eye.” She owns a pistol costing £1,200, shoots wearing a conventional village attire.
Since 1999, Tomar has won Gold at 25 national championships. What a beautiful woman, an absolute inspiration!
A great movie on her life’s story – Saand Ki Aankh (Bulls-eye).
