Day of the dead…

Today’s the ‘Day of the Dead’ (Spanish: Día de Muertos), a Mexican holiday focused on special gatherings of family and friends. Pray and remember dead loved ones, to support their spiritual journey.

Families visit cemeteries to decorate graves and tombs of relatives. A 3-day fiesta is filled with marigolds – flowers of the dead, muertos (bread of the dead), sugar skulls, cool cardboard skeletons, fruits, nuts, incense, candle lights, traditional food and simple shrines or altars at home.

Believe, ‘Day of the Dead’ brings good luck. People get tattoos of skulls, dolls or figures of the dead. Look back at photos and memorabilia of those departed. Can have a celebatory, humorous tone as they remember funny events and anecdotes.

What a nice, joyful way to honour the dead…
