The blog will pick a word of the week, to share & explore the selected word. Here’s an expression for the word – alchemy.

Classical music was inspired by alchemy because for centuries, alchemy wasn’t just chemistry, it was a complete worldview blending science, philosophy, humanity & art. Music was understood as a reflection of the cosmic order. At its core, alchemy is about transformation – turning base matter into gold, chaos into order or the human spirit into soul. Music does exactly this – it transforms sound into meaning, noise into harmony, emotion into transcendence. Composers used alchemy as a metaphor for evolution, where listening has a deeper psychological impact rather than just entertainment.
To thinkers like Pythagoras, Boethius & later Renaissance humanists, music was audible mathematics, governed by the same alchemical principles. Composing music was symbolic alchemy with sound. Composers like Wagner, Scriabin & Stockhausen also turned to alchemy as a powerful framework to express what music itself does. It turns chaos into calm, moments into meaning.

Great job simplifying something so complex.
