Ocean

The blog will pick a word of the week, to share & explore the selected word. Here’s an expression for the word – the ocean.

An ocean symbolises the deep, mysterious, peaceful & unknowable forces underlying reality. The ocean is used as a metaphor for the limits of human knowledge, most of it is still unexplored. “The voice of the sea speaks to the soul” – Kate Chopin. Many philosophers, writers & cultures have respected the ocean as a powerful entity for metaphysical, ethical & existential reflection. Many traditions (Greek, Polynesian, Hindu, Indigenous American) revere the ocean as the source of life or even the cosmos. Poseidon, Tangaroa, Yemọja & countless sea deities embody cultural understandings of the ocean’s value & presence.

Philosophers like Kant & Schopenhauer viewed the vast, overwhelming natural forces like the sea as beautiful experiences of the sublime, where human vulnerability, humility & nature’s power become intensely clear. Sartre & Camus shared sea imagery to express human freedom, peacefulness, limitlessness & courage when facing challenges. “You are not a drop in the ocean. You are the entire ocean in a drop” – Rumi. The ocean is full of paradoxes – sometimes gentle, sometimes fierce. Sometimes expressive, sometimes quiet. Sometimes resistant, sometimes in the flow. Sometimes reflective, sometimes playful. Sometimes colourful, sometimes dark.

Being at sea alters how we understand space, time, life & even ourselves. The constant dance of tides & waves symbolises transience & tranquility. Surreal experiences of the sea – horizons, colours, motion & sound. Heavenly. “Those who dwell among the beauties & mysteries of the ocean are never alone or weary of life” – Rachel Carson. Serenity & water are wedded forever. “And the sea will grant each man new hope” – Hermann Hesse.
