Serendipity

The blog will pick a word of the week, to share & explore the selected word. Here’s an expression for the word – serendipity. Defined as the occurrence of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way. Often used to describe a lucky coincidence, especially one that brings something delightful without being planned. Serendipity is an amazing concept that refers to the unexpected discovery of something valuable or pleasant while not specifically looking for it. Happy accidents or moments, where fortune seems to smile unexpectedly.

The discovery happens randomly while we are doing something else or looking for something entirely different. Our ability to recognise the value in the unexpected is a crucial part of any serendipitous experience. We often retroactively assign importance to unexpected events, weaving them into a narrative that makes sense of our lives.

Cultivating a serendipitous mindset means training ourselves to be more observant, curious, spontaneous, exploratory, reflective & responsive to the unexpected. Above all, being fully present in the moment. Serendipity thrives in cross pollination, when different beliefs, unique insights, people or fields collide. “There’ll always be serendipity involved in discovery” – Jeff Bezos.

How do we invite serendipity into our lives? How can we experience serendipity? It’s not just about luck, it’s about being ready & receptive when it strikes. Serendipity thrives on trust, spontaneity & unpredictability. Sometimes, we can challenge ourselves to say yes to the things we’d normally not consider, like starting a new passion project. Maybe, listening to a different genre of music or podcast. Every yes creates an opening for something unexpected. Serendipity often rewards an open & curious mind that’s ventured into unfamiliar territory.

Serendipity often hides in the details. Each day, we can spend just 15 minutes observing something ordinary in a new way. What ideas or insights come to mind? Serendipity is often about unexpected combinations. We can pick some random topics like astronomy or art & brainstorm about how they may inspire something fresh & creative. Serendipity loves the intersection of ideas, people & paths. People are key serendipity agents. We can start meaningful conversations or ask deeper questions. What’s the last unexpected conversation that inspired or motivated us?

Reflecting creates awareness. At the end of each day, we can ask ourselves – what small choice led to something surprising? Did anything unexpected happen today? Did I notice anything different?

Wandering is not wasting time. Not all those who wander are lost, some are just waiting to be surprised. Once a week, we can go somewhere or do something with no agenda or expectation. A walk in nature. A bookstore. A drive. Just let our intuition guide us. When we give ourselves the permission to explore, we also give serendipity a chance. “Sometimes, you find things when you’re not looking for them” – Alexander Fleming.
