Slave monkeys…

Pig-Tailed Macaque should be living in a huge matriarchal family, chattering in the trees of the lush rain-forests of Thailand. Freely foraging for seeds, leaves & flowers. Instead, as infants they’re snatched from the forests, chained by the neck, shoved into cages barely big enough, transported to specialist monkey schools. Torturously trained to shimmy up 100ft high coconut trees, always chained to pick a 1,000 coconuts per day. Denied freedom or any semblance of a natural life.

Leashed monkeys play a miserable part in the £315 million Thai coconut milk market. Cruelly taught to ride bicycles, shoot basketball hoops, perform sit-ups, lift weights to double as money-spinning entertainers for tourists. Once trained, they’re sold to farmers for up to 100,000 Thai Baht (£2,500).

Of course, coconuts can be picked by humans but we aren’t as efficient as Macaques. Add the cost of paying the staff & insurances. Harvesting coconut is a critical source of income in the low income communities. Embracing mechanised pickers, planting dwarf coconut trees are sustainable solutions to support these communities. Many supermarket chains have vowed to stop selling monkey-picked coconut products. Still, there’s a long way to go to save these vulnerable monkeys & rehabilitate them in their natural environments. Please compassionately donate to save the Pig-Tailed Macaque from a life of misery & slavery.
