Litter made of glitter – clothes, make-up, decorations & craft projects is hurting our natural fresh-water habitats. Researchers have warned that supposedly bio-degradable glitter particles are quite toxic.
Glitter, usually made of plastic is washed into rivers, lakes & ponds where they stunt plant growth & harm marine life. Fresh-water habitats are home to more than 100,000 species of plants & animals.
Most modern glitter is made from a film of Polyethylene terephthalate (PET), coated with aluminium & a layer of thin plastic. Takes 1000’s of years to break down, pollutes our precious environment.
Glitter can be easily stripped out from greeting cards, gifts & festive packaging. Crackers, wrapping paper, bags & flowers can be glitter-free. We can use make-up without glitter, as well. Spread a little sparkle, without glitter.
