The Monarch, Karner Blue, Quino Checkerspot, Saint Francis Satyr, Oregon Silver-spot butterflies are important endangered species.
Each species is reliant on specific plants & plant families as their host for eggs & caterpillars. As the world warms, the host plants are moving outside the temperature zones of butterflies. Intensifying storms are blowing most butterflies off course.
Human intervention is threatening both migratory & non-migratory butterflies. The greatest threats to butterflies is habitat change – loss of nature due to residential, commercial & agricultural development. Climate change & widespread pesticide use is killing butterflies.
Can we create a happy & healthy butterfly habitat in our backyards by planting native flowering plants & avoid using pesticides as butterflies rely on the nectar from these flowering plants?
