As someone deeply intrigued by archaeological sites, an obvious place to visit with a dense concentration of temples & pagodas in the world — Bagan.
Bagan is an ancient city in Myanmar (formerly Burma). On the banks of mighty Ayeyarwady river. Bagan Archaeological Area covers over 2,000 Buddhist monuments towering over lush green plains. Holy sites in Old Bagan – Ananda Temple (1091), topped with a golden stupa & a beautiful 12th century Dhammayangyi Temple.
Over 10,000 stunning stupas sprinkled between 9th-13th centuries. Most awe-inspiring views of temples, monasteries & stupas from the sunrise hot-air balloon flights, gliding 2,000 feet in the air. A peaceful sunset sail over the Ayeyarwady river is simply surreal.
Cycle curiously around local markets. Mani Sithu is top-notch. Myinkaba near Bagan has been a centre for lacquer production. Precious. Pristine.
