Today, the Blog remembers all the children who are still living in multi-dimensional poverty, worldwide. Over 700 million people still live in extreme poverty. They struggle to survive on less than $1.90 a day. Children who grow up impoverished lack the food, sanitation, shelter, health care, education they need to survive & thrive. Across the world, 1 billion children are multi dimensionally poor, lack necessities as basic as nutrition or clean water. An estimated 356 million children live in extreme poverty. 2/3rd live in the sub-Saharan Africa. Globally, 426 million children live in conflict zones.
1.6 billion students went out of school due to Covid-19. Mental health conditions affect 15% of adolescents, worldwide. Over 10 million child marriages occurred as a result of the pandemic. Child labour has risen to 160 million worldwide. 50 million children suffer from wasting, the most life-threatening form of malnutrition.
The consequences are grave. Worldwide, the poorest children are twice as likely to die in their childhood than their wealthier peers. For ones growing up in humanitarian crises, the risks of deprivation & exclusion surge. Even in the world’s richest countries, 1 in 7 children live in poverty. No matter where they are, children who grow up impoverished suffer from poor living standards, develop fewer skills for the workforce, earn lower wages as adults.
Amidst growing conflicts & worsening climate change, never has a child-first approach been more critical. We can bring hope & healing to the children in need. “Together, we can do great things” – Mother Teresa.
