Email: Tips on writing a cover letter for job application? (Malaysia)

Perhaps, the most challenging part of a job application is writing an effective cover letter. Before we start writing, we can research about the company – focus, values & the specific job we want. Need to catch the attention of the hiring manager with a strong opening statement. We can clearly articulate how much we know about what the company does & some of the challenges it faces.

Then, explain how our experience & expertise has equipped us to meet those needs as the ‘best fit‘. Share accomplishments that show the same. We can also demonstrate our eagerness for the role. Why is this job exciting & what do we bring to the table? How will we create, contribute to the teams success?

For the right tone of voice we can think about the company’s culture. If it’s a creative agency we might take risks. If it’s a conservative organisation like a bank, a formal tone helps. While our résumé is meant to be a look-back, the cover letter can focus on the future & what we want to achieve. Enthusiasm & passion convey personality. Keep it creative, small & succinct.
