Hundreds of women & children have died of the virus in India. The situation is likely far worse in rural areas where poor surveillance, delayed testing & spotty access to critical care has led to a high death toll from the virus.
COVID-19 has orphaned many children. India’s adoption rates are low. In India’s most populous state of Uttar Pradesh, over 5,000 Covid orphans had been identified. Numbers are much higher across the country. There are fears that children can be exploited for cheap manual labour, vulnerable to abuse.
