Emails: Appreciated post on return to sports after injuries. Please share more inspiring examples. (India)
Often, injuries test their body, but not their spirit. At an international level, a favourite story is Niki Lauda, an Austrian Formula One driver, an aviation entrepreneur. A 3 time F1 World Champion, the only driver in F1 history to have been a champion for both Ferrari & McLaren. Widely considered to be one of the greatest F1 drivers with an amazing return to race tracks after a horrific crash. The F1 battle between Niki Lauda & James Hunt was beautifully dramatised in the film Rush (2013).
Specific to India – Sandeep Singh, a professional field hockey player, an ex-captain of the Indian National Hockey team. A full back, penalty corner specialist. Famous as Flicker Singh.
In 2006, Sandeep was seriously injured, hit by an accidental gunshot on a train while on his way to join the national team for World Cup in Africa. Paralysed, on a wheelchair for 1 year of his life. He not only recovered but also played the World Cup in 2010. A well known drag-flicker, one of world’s best. A drag flick speed of 145 km/h. With 16 goals, highest goal scorer in the Olympics. Rightfully, the Arjuna Award recipient for awesome achievements in field hockey. An inspiring life story.
