Ideas

Email: Need to find new, big ideas for innovation in my team. (HK)

Usually, we equate innovation to the need for big ideas, out of the box or blue sky thinking. Often, innovation isn’t hampered by a lack of great ideas. Rather a lack of noticing the creative ideas already there. Not an idea problem, a recognition problem!

Well known examples – Kodak invented the 1st digital camera, didn’t pursue. Sony developed prototypes to shape the future of digital photography. Xerox built the 1st personal computer, didn’t invest in technology. Allowed Apple to snatch the opportunity. Sometimes, smart companies can overlook creative ideas, especially when challenged. Our perceptions on creativity & practicality need to be balanced in tough competitive scenarios or fluctuating market dynamics.

A potential solution to idea killing is to evolve the internal structures for ideas to seamlessly move through. Instead of the old hierarchy to find or approve ideas, we can create a real time model or incentives driven filtering process? Perhaps, playfully set up an ideas market on the intranet. List as a stock for employees to bid with virtual currency! If an idea gathers enough support, a feasibility analysis, prototype or reward can be considered. Creates an open, curious culture full of stimulation, inspiration, motivation & passion. A recognition, growth related solution is worth a shot. Often, it’s the last key on the ring that opens the door.
