Ocean warming…

An international team of scientists determined average temperature of world’s oceans in 2019 was .075 degrees Celsius higher than 1981–2010 average.

Given massive volume of oceans, an increase even this small would require a staggering influx of heat – 228 sextillion Joules worth. A hard number to contextualise, so scientists did the math to put it into an explosive frame of reference. Compared it to amount of energy released by the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima in Japan.

Hiroshima atom-bomb exploded with an energy of 63,000,000,000,000 Joules. The amount of heat we have put in world’s oceans in past 25 years equals to 3.6 billion Hiroshima atom-bomb explosions!

Averages to 4 Hiroshima bombs worth of energy entering oceans each second for 25 years. In 2019, ocean warming was equivalent to about 5 Hiroshima bombs of heat every second, 365 days.

Ice is melting faster, causing sea levels to rise. Dolphins, marine life are dying. Heat makes hurricanes, typhoons more powerful, rainfall more intense. Every moment we delay taking action to slow, reverse ocean warming,  it’ll only get worse at an alarming rate of increase. Fingers crossed…
