Love clear, charming coral reefs. Most magnificent, complex. Unfortunately, breaking due to pollution, over-exploitation, climate crisis. Ocean is getting too warm for corals.
Climate warning light is no longer flashing on and off, it’s permanently glowing red. UN Panel on Climate Change cautioned if we’re unable to reduce emissions, limit average global temperature rise to 1.5°C, 70-90% of tropical coral reefs could be lost by 2100. If the world fails to keep warming from reaching 2°C, almost no reefs will survive.
Chasing Coral – Netflix Documentary
We’re losing coral reefs to harmful fishing practices. Fish fences, a technique in tropical coastal communities to indiscriminately trap fish with changing tides is doing more damage to coral reefs. Number of reef fish declined by 1/2 in due to catches of vulnerable small species. Losing access to fish threatens survival of 1000’s of coastal communities. 850 million people live around coral reefs, benefit from food, tourism.
Offering support to communities to identify best fishing methods is our best shot at saving gorgeous reefs. An integrated, coherent approach will ensure intact, connected coastal eco-systems, protected communities, sustainable harvest of marine resources, responsible tourism, regeneration of reefs. We can still save coral reefs from a ticking time-bomb…
