Wow. Question is what do we believe? Can humbly share what I’ve learnt from work experiences. Worth seeking focused guidance, plans to track progress. Good news is critical thinking is a learned skill. Can surely improve critical thinking by:
- Confidently, politely questioning assumptions
- Reasoning with logic, listening to instincts
- Diversifying ideas, perspectives
We may think we already do! Probably, just not as consciously, curiously, compassionately, creatively, immaculately.
Questioning assumptions
Typically start by questioning firm’s assumptions in a balanced way. Of course, it’s hard to question everything. Imagine going through a day asking self if the sky is blue? How do we know if economy won’t implode tomorrow? 1st step in questioning assumptions is figuring out what, when, why, how to question? A questioning approach is particularly helpful when stakes are high. Question basics, how do we know business will increase? What does research say about trends on future markets? Another way to question assumptions is to consider alternative perspectives, scenarios. What if our clients changed? What if our suppliers went out of business? Such sort of ‘what if’ questions offer new ideas for growth.
Reasoning with logic, listening to instincts
We can draw sweeping conclusions based on insufficient data, evidence. Pay close attention to chain of logic, analysis. Ask if strategy, goals, milestones are justifiable? Do all pieces build seamlessly for robust conclusions? Have we listened to natural, intuitive instincts? Have we screened team’s knowledge for clear, distinct view-points? Best approach to share points of view, suggestions for maximum impact?
Seek diversity of thought, perspectives
Occasionally, can we see stuff differently from usual style? Create, solicit unique points of view in, around. Makes a better thinker. Start small for rich insights, intently observe.
