Despite their exalted status, relative lack of natural predators, pandas are hugely at risk. Severe threats from humans have left just 1,800 pandas in the wild.
The Panda with distinctive black, white coat is adored, considered a national treasure in China. Lives mainly in temperate forests high in the mountains of S.W. China, where they subsist entirely on bamboo.
Forest loss reduces Pandas access to bamboo they need to survive. Infrastructure development (dams, roads, railways) is increasingly fragmenting, isolating Panda population. Prevents Pandas from finding new bamboo forests, potential mates.
