Why we sleep

Does everyone really need 7 hours of sleep a night? We almost certainly do! Dr. Roth at Henry Ford Hospital, “number of people who can survive on 5 hours of sleep or less without impairment, rounded to a whole number is zero.” Interpersonal relations, work success, athletic performance & happiness can all be at risk. The evolutionary health upsides of sleep are greater than imagined. Sleep produces complex neuro-chemical baths to re-charge our brains. Re-stocks the armoury of our immune system, helps fight malignancy, prevent infections & wards off sickness.

What can we do to improve our sleep hygiene?

  • Replace LED bulbs in bedrooms, these emit most sleep-corroding blue light
  • To successfully initiate sleep, our core temperature has to decrease by 2-3 degrees
  • Limit alcohol, not a sleep aid contrary to popular belief
  • Possibly take a short mid-day nap, short breaks during the day
  • Focus on creative pursuits, exercise or mindfulness to relax

Sleep is a priceless & precious asset. An insightful book, Why We Sleep?
