Love the wilderness & time spent in nature. Peaceful. Wish I were a ‘dragonfly‘. As well as being able to detect blue, green & red colour, dragonflies can perceive light much beyond the human visual ability. They can see ultra-violet light or polarised light reflecting off water. Scientists attribute the dragonflies ultra-HD senses to their possession of 30,000 plus ommatidia (facets of an insect’s eye, a photo-receptor unit). Their perception of a mosaic of partially overlapping images allows them to see in multiple directions at the same time.
The human brain receives images from our eyes on an average of 24 images per second. Dragonflies receive 250 images per second. Stupendous. We’re missing so much beauty when it comes to the relatively narrow perception of the light spectrum in comparison to dragonflies! Given their sensational, superior light detecting abilities, do dragonflies have a more realistic view of our world?
