Wonder what distinguishes music from non-music? Our world is full of sounds, both man made & in nature. Quite beautiful like the ocean waves, the whistling wind, the sound of drums & the human voice. But, only a few sounds qualify as music. Is music structured or organised sound? Technically, music is comprised of a key signature, a meter, a melody, harmony & rhythm. Then, what is a bird song?
Often, music is quite emotionally expressive. Stimulating. Setting wonderful words to music is creation & passion. If music enhances our sensitivity & expressive nature then words aren’t really needed, even though these accompany music. How does music achieve such astounding emotive power? Puzzling. An incredible intrinsic character. Are emotions in the music or merely in our reactions to music? Curiously, what is music?
