Deepavali or Diwali is an Indian ‘festival of lights‘. One of the most popular festivals symbolising triumph of light over darkness, wisdom over ignorance, love over hatred, spirit of forgiveness, compassion.
Temples, homes, offices are brightly illuminated. Associated with a diversity of deities, symbolism. Tradition links festival to legends in Hindu epic Ramayana where Diwali is the day God Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, Hanuman returned after a period in exile. Rama’s army defeated evil king Ravana.
Homes are illuminated with Diyas (oil lamps, candles), offer Puja (worship) to Lakshmi, Goddess of Prosperity. Sky is lit with fireworks, family feasts, Mithai (sweets), gifts shared. Vibrant colours, glittering lights, music, dancing, delicious food.
