Orcas are a unique in the Pacific North-west. Genetically, behaviourally distinct from other killer whales.
Due to decline of primary prey Chinook Salmon, Orca population has been decreasing for years. Destruction of Salmon habitat has caused Salmon stocks either plummet or vanish, leaving Orcas with less to eat. Orca diet consists of 90% Salmon, majority of which are Chinook Salmon.
Today, Orcas are slowly starving to death. On a collision course with extinction, dealing with noise from ship traffic, toxic pollution. Under-water noise from boats disrupt Orcas echo-location.
Pollution from old vessels contaminate Salmon that Orcas eat. As whales eat polluted Salmon, accumulate toxic chemicals in their bodies. Hope we can save the Orcas, a beautiful whale species.
