Email: Any tips for aspiring young writers or bloggers? (India)

Received a few notes asking for tips for young & aspiring writers. Grateful for your appreciation of my blog.

  1. Dream big, start small – writing short articles, poems, stories is a great way to start. Compels us to creatively create characters, to convey & connect in condensed yet succinct, surprising ways. Much less intimidating than writing a novel, initially. Even spontaneous journaling helps.
  2. Beginner’s mindset – focus on curious learning, on the tone of voice, plot structures, character developments, general story-telling. Fellow writers offer encouragement & inspire to keep going to express freely.
  3. Write thoughts down – jot down instant ideas, exciting conversations, interesting insights. Don’t trust memory! Allow natural & intuitive flow of words. We don’t write because we want to, but because we have to. It’s not a choice, it’s a calling! Be emotionally involved.
  4. Write everyday – writing is a skill. The more we write, the better we become. Dedication & discipline helps, no matter how busy we are.
  5. Take advice – humbly, gratefully seek guidance from people with the abilities to raise our potential of creative expression & offer honest feedback. Ask for help, unafraid of judgement.
  6. Authenticity – a good writer isn’t one who uses fancy words or complex languages but one who keeps things surprisingly simple & authentic. A great one touches our heart-strings, stimulates expansiveness in the mind & sparks our spirit.
  7. Passion – the magic ingredient. Do it with passion or not at all. Observe, listen intently, even silence speaks. Spend some time in solitude for free flights of imagination. Reading is luxury, writing is hard work. Explore, discover & innovate to build uniqueness.
  8. No right or wrong way – express our perceptions & perspectives honestly. We write because we can’t not write!
  9. Innovation – the art of writing requires inspiration, motivation, style & wit. Above all, a story – fact or fiction!
  10. Originality – a must for great work. Create something new, creative & innovative.
