Weird Wimbledon stories…

Re-posting top 2018 posts.

In 1982, Anne White (USA) took Wimbledon’s famous ‘all-white’ rule by the book. She appeared on Court 2 wearing a figure-hugging neck to ankle white body-suit. Was pulled up for outfit. “Drew too much sexual attention”. She covered up, “I don’t want to put people off their strawberries, cream”.

Real survivor” is a term used in tennis. Norris Williams (USA) was one real survivor! In April 1912, went for an impromptu swim in Atlantic Ocean. Spent hours before being rescued. 1,490 and his father weren’t so lucky. Williams is only survivor of ‘Titanic‘ to have won Wimbledon title.

In 1879, John Hartley won Wimbledon final. John was a vicar. Didn’t expect progress, no cover for Sunday service! Opponent, an Irishman “St Leger” Goold. He was friends with Danish Emma Liven. Soon, dismembered body of Emma was found. Goold admitted to murder. Only convicted murderer to have contested a Wimbledon final.
