Japanese art of Kintsugi

Came across this unique & inspiring Japanese art form. Broken pottery is mended with lacquer mixed with powdered gold, silver or platinum. Instead of trying to mend the pieces invisibly, hiding that these were ever broken, the cracks are transformed into beautiful designs & decorations. Hence, the pieces become even more valuable than before because of their flaws!

A perfect story of wisdom & compassion. As social creatures we get tied up trying to portray versions of ourselves that people find interesting. Our intrinsic duality at its best. But, it’s unsustainable. Inevitably a moment comes when we can’t pretend any more. It’s best to accept that we’re naturally flawed – absolutely human. Being real brings creativity, individuality & authenticity. Brené Brown defines shame as an intensely painful feeling of believing that we are flawed, inadequate or un-worthy. Vulnerability offers composure, courage & compassion.

All of us face challenges, sadness & regret. No-one is immune. But, it’s worth compassionately & passionately expressing ourselves. Seeing others accept their vulnerability with a smile motivates me to lovingly & unconditionally accept my own.
