In classical mythology, Cupid (meaning desire) is ‘God of Desire‘ – love, attraction, affection, sex. Portrayed as son of Love Goddess, Venus and War God, Mars. He’s also known in Latin as Amor (Love). His Greek counterpart is Eros. Cupid rides a dolphin as a playful motif.
Call him a ‘cute, chubby boy with a bow, arrow, torch’! Cupid carries 2 kinds of arrows, one with a sharp golden point, other with a blunt tip of lead. A person hit by a golden arrow is filled with uncontrollable desires, passionate pleasures!
Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind,
And therefore is winged Cupid painted blind,
Nor hath love’s mind of any judgement taste,
Wings and no eyes figure unheedy haste,
And therefore is love said to be a child,
Because in choice he is so oft beguiled.
