Matryoshka dolls…

Love Matryoshka dolls, also called Russian nesting dolls, stacking dolls, Russian dolls. A set of wooden dolls of decreasing size, placed one inside another. The name ‘Matryoshka’ means ‘little matron’, a diminutive form of Russian female first names ‘Matryona’ or ‘Matriosha’. A symbol of feminine side of Russian culture, associated with family legacy, fun, fertility.

Matryoshka dolls follow a particular theme – peasant girls in traditional dresses, fairy tale characters. Common themes of Matryoshka’s are floral, relate to nature. Largest set of Matryoshka dolls is a 51-piece set hand painted by Youlia Bereznitskaia, Russia, 2003.
