Henry Purcell is considered England’s greatest composer of Baroque era. Purcell was dubbed the ‘Orpheus Britannicus’ for his ability to combine powerful English counter point with expressive, flexible, dramatic word settings.
Purcell was a creative phenomenon. Accorded a full burial in Westminster Abbey. Tomb stone carries memorable inscription: ‘Here lyes Henry Purcell, Esq. who left his life and is gone to that blessed place where only his harmony can be exceeded.’
