To demonstrate smart technology in mobiles, Huawei set a challenge to finish a most famous incomplete work in musical history. Schubert’s Symphony No.8 started in 1822, but he never completed this piece of work.
The 1st two movements are complete, but only fragments of final two movements exist. Huawei used Artificial Intelligence to complete the work with composer Lucas Cantor.
AI in Huawei Mate 20 Pro smartphones to create new melodies. Engineers fed music in form of data into phone’s Dual Neural Processing Unit. So, AI had data about timbre, pitch, meter that Schubert used in his melodies.
AI created melodies with data. Composer Lucas Cantor chose his favourites, orchestrated those melodies into final two movements as Schubert’s ‘Unfinished’ Symphony.
The new completion was performed on 4 February, in London. Wow!
