India’s Menstrual Man…

Email: An Indian man who inspires? (Germany)

A truly kind, compassionate, caring human. India’s Menstrual Man!

“I’ve accumulated no money but I accumulate a lot of happiness.”

Arunachalam Muruganantham’s invention came at a great personal cost. Nearly lost his family, money, place in society. But, held his sense of humour, selfless giving.

Shocked to discover his wife used rags during menstruation. “I will be honest,” he said. “I wouldn’t even use it to clean my scooter.” When he looked into it further, found hardly any women in villages used sanitary pads, fewer than 1 in 10. 70% reproductive diseases due to poor menstrual hygiene, affects maternal mortality.

Created 1st low cost cotton pads, tested the product on himself, “became the man who wore a sanitary pad”. Walked, cycled, ran to test absorption rates.

Everyone thought he’d gone mad. Villagers convinced he was possessed by evil spirits, asked him to leave the village.

Took 18 months to build 250 production machines. Women chose their own brand-name – “by the women, for the women and to the women”.

Received President’s award for innovative solutions to women’s issues.

An Inspirational leader. A true believer and innovator.
