Kathak

Kathak is a dance of love. Movements include intricate footwork accented by bells worn around the ankles and stylised gestures adapted from normal body language. Began as a temple dance but soon moved into the courts of ruling houses.

Bharatanatyam

Dance of Tamil Nadu in southern India. Originally a temple dance for women.  Express Hindu religious stories and devotions. Dance movements are characterised by bent legs, while feet keep rhythm. Hands used in series of mudras or symbolic hand gestures.

Kuchipudi

Kuchipudi requires talent in both dancing and singing. State of Andhra Pradesh. Highly ritualised with a formalised song-and-dance introduction, sprinkling of holy water, burning of incense, along with invocations of goddesses.
