Music is world’s universal language. Music evokes emotions. Earliest musical instruments appeared over 40,000-50,000 years ago. 

Tutankhamun’s Trumpets

A pair of trumpets from Pharaoh Tutankhamun’s tomb, oldest playable trumpets in the world. Over 3,000 years old. One with sterling silver, the other from bronze or copper.

Jiahu Flutes

The bone flutes are oldest known musical instruments from China. 7,000 – 9,000 years old. 33 flutes were uncovered. Vary in size. Have five, six, seven or eight holes. Red-Crown Crane wing bone material.

Made of resonant rocks in India, Vietnam. 11 large stone slabs, positioned vertically close to one another. Stones were chiseled to produce music. 5000-10,000 years old.

20,000 years old. Oldest examples from Ukraine and France. Made of thin slat of wood and cord. Australian Aborigines are best known for using this instrument.

20,000–35,000 years old. Isturitz Cave, France. Made of Vulture Wing Bones. More than 20 flutes were uncovered.

35,000–40,000 years old. Found in Hohle Fels Cave in Germany. Made of Griffon Vulture Bone. 8.5 inches long, close to modern day flutes.

43,100 years old. Cerkno, Slovenia. Made of Cave Bear Femur. Called Neanderthal flute.

42,000 years old. 3 flutes found in Geisenklösterle Cave, Germany. Made of Mute Swan bone, Mammoth Ivory.
