In silence
the tea pot is poured
hands steady with care.

Because this moment
fragile as porcelain
will never be poured the same way twice.

There are infinite tomorrows
but not this one.

Not this exact sky
not this exact sunset
not we, as we are now.

Tomorrow, it will not be
this unrepeatable now.

That is enough
to make it sacred.

We speak as if
there will be more mornings
more afternoons, more laughter.

But time does not promise
what we assume.

So, we gather this hour
like fallen petals
precious because they fall.

We hold this moment
complete in itself
like a single note
that needs no song.

We stay fully, fiercely
in the only moment we have.

Now.

Each moment in our life happens only once. Ichigo ichie is often spoken in Japan when greeting someone to convey that the encounter is precious & special. It is a tenet of Zen Buddhism, attributed to a 16th century master of the Japanese tea ceremony, whose intricate tea rituals inspired us to focus on the present moment with hope & healing. From this age-old concept comes a new kind of mindfulness & peace.

In The Book Of Ichigo Ichie, we lovingly learn to appreciate the beauty of the fleeting, the way the Japanese celebrate the cherry blossoms each year, knowing they’ll have to wait a whole year to see them again. We understand how to use all five senses to anchor ourself in the present. We also relish the magic of unique events or coincidences to find meaning in our lives.

Ichi-go ichie-e inspires us to discover our ikigai or life’s purpose, because it’s only by learning to be present in the moment that we can identify what motivates us or brings us true joy. Each one of us possesses the key that can open the door to intention, passion, compassion, fulfilment & love of life. And, that key is ichi-go ichie-e. Time is treasure.

Read the Power Of Moments by Chip & Dan Heath. Unique perspectives on the defining moments that shape our lives. Interestingly, we can somehow create them. When recalling our life’s special experiences, we remember specific moments – peaks, pits, milestones or transitions. A defining experience is therefore a moment. Memorable moments are vastly more magical, mesmerising, mysterious & meaningful than others.

Often, we think that the rewards are proportional to the time invested in planned endeavours (work or personal). But, our rewards are simply measured by a few joyous, extra-ordinary, surprising, surreal or inspiring moments. Just one defining moment is enough to impact the course of our work or personal lives. Even, an entire history. We can make these moments matter by practising gratitude, by making a difference, by celebrating the simple peaks, by overcoming challenges with belief, by nurturing hope & by harnessing creative possibilities.

Ichi-go ichi-e literally describes the beautiful Japanese cultural concept of treasuring an unrepeatable moment. The term stands to remind us that no moment in life can be repeated. Life is transient. Our lives are made up of a series of memorable moments & special events that may never happen again. Not exactly in the same way.

Sometimes, we can speak as if tomorrow will offer the same arrangement, the same light, the same breath, the same self, but time does not repeat itself. It encourages us to feel fully in the moment. Every moment, every experience, every interaction is precious. It will never happen again in exactly the same way, so it should be cherished fully with gratitude. Life’s beauty is hidden in its inability to repeat itself. Each second is a quiet miracle, never to return.

The concept is deeply tied to the Japanese tea ceremony culture, especially influenced by tea masters like Sen no Rikyū. For example, we may go for tea with friends & have a lovely time, but that moment can never be repeated. We might try to replicate in the same tea house, ordering the same tea, but, no matter how many variables are the same, it’s still a new day, a new experience. Each minute is ontologically unique because it cannot be recreated, even if circumstances look identical.

The sky burns quietly, colours dissolving into each other. By the time we understand its beauty, it has already begun to leave. Tomorrow will bring another sunset, but not this one. Deep in the forest, nothing repeats itself. Not the pattern of sunlight, not the rhythm of wings, not the stillness between sounds. Even silence is so different, each time we listen. It inspires us to truly appreciate daily experiences without taking them for granted, recognising the fleeting nature of life.

Time is not cyclical in experience, it is irreversibly unfolding. Our reality is made of unrepeatable moments, not predictable repetitions. True understanding & compassion comes from full presence. An awareness of the present moment is the highest form of insight. “Live as if every moment matters absolutely, because it does.” A meaningful life comes from fully honouring each moment as it unfolds. How many infinities have we lost to thinking there would be more time? A moment. A lifetime.

We have been looking up at the night sky long before recorded history, so stars naturally became one of our biggest sources of imagination, inspiration & awe. Stars trigger wonder & emotion. When we stare at the night sky, it feels infinite, mysterious & beautiful. That same feeling is something musicians try to capture in sound, whether it’s calm & floating (Brian Eno) or powerful & overwhelming (Hans Zimmer).

Interestingly, the stars & space have inspired musical structure. Orbital patterns or cycles resemble rhythm & repetition. Frequencies or waves (physics) relate directly to how sound works. Some artists even translate cosmic data into music. Stars inspire music because they sit at the magical intersection of soul, mystery & meaning. Stars make us feel deeply connected with the universe. Wish upon a star!

The philosophy of the stars is a thread that runs through many traditions, all trying to answer a simple, yet profound question – what does it mean that we exist in a vast universe filled with stars? Philosophers like Plato & Aristotle saw the stars as part of a perfect, orderly cosmos. Looking at the night sky inspired awe & that awe was the beginning of philosophy itself. Later, Immanuel Kant famously wrote about the ‘starry heavens above me’, connecting the vastness of space with the depth of human thought & emotion. Across cultures, stars have symbolised strength, hope, healing, faith, dreams, nostalgia & transcendence. “I have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night” – Sarah Williams. “Only in the darkness can you see the stars” – Martin Luther King Jr.

For centuries, the stars have symbolised spirituality, surreality & destiny. The Greeks imagined the charming celestial spheres moving in perfect harmony. Medieval thinkers saw the stars as part of a divine design. Modern philosophy & science recognises randomness – supernovas, black holes or the expanding space, raising the question – is the universe fundamentally ordered or indifferent? Modern thinkers like Albert Camus & Jean-Paul Sartre saw the stars differently. They saw silence & stillness.

In Taoist terms, the star reflects living in harmony with the Tao (the natural way of the universe). In the flow. In Hinduism, the star reflects alignment with the cosmic truth that hope is not external, it comes from remembering who we truly are. The star becomes not a promise, not a wish, not a prayer, but an awareness of the present moment, a serene state of being. Calm, aligned & quietly illuminated from within. When I admire the wonders of a sunset or the beauty of the stars, my soul expands in the worship of the creator” – Mahatma Gandhi.

“For my part I know nothing with any certainty, but the sight of the stars makes me dream” – Vincent van Gogh. The universe doesn’t tell us why we’re here. That’s where human freedom takes birth. Life becomes more precious because it isn’t all pre-determined. We can create our own meaning. As Carl Sagan said, “we are made of star stuff.” Stars make us feel small, yet they make us think big!
