Zen In Japanese Culture. A visual journey through Zen’s influence on Japanese life – calligraphy to martial arts. Formed by a convergence of Buddha’s teachings, Taoism & local traditions, Zen has had a profound impact on the art, architecture & culture of Japan. As a philosophy, Zen promotes the recognition of peace & minimalism. Less is more. As an aesthetic, it’s marked by a striking simplicity, tranquility & reverence for empty spaces. Promotes the principle of Wabi Sabi – beauty & harmony in all things transient & imperfect. Countless Japanese creators have engaged with Zen’s traditional wisdom & style.

Gavin Blair shares how Zen has found a natural expression in all aspects of Japanese culture – tea ceremony, origami, ryokan, bonsai etc. Gorgeous photographs highlight the beauty of Zen – the hanging Noren curtains to adorn the entrances or the intricate craft of a Wagasaumbrella.

Le Onde (Italian: The Waves) – incredible music by the minimalist Italian composer & pianist Ludovico Einaudi. Based on the novel The Waves by the British writer Virginia Woolf. It reads “if it were a story, it would be set on the sea-front of a long beach. A beach without a beginning & without an end. The story of a man who walks along this shore, perhaps never meets anyone. His gaze lingers occasionally to look at some object or fragment brought from the sea. The footprints of a crab or a solitary seagull. I always take the sand, the sky, some clouds & the sea. Only the waves change – always the same, yet different. Smaller. Larger. Shorter. Longer.”

“Empty your mind. Be formless, shapeless like water. Fluidity is the essence of inner freedom & peace. Zen is the art of seeing into the nature of our own being. It’s a spark, a realisation. Stillness, being present in the moment is the key. The beauty of Zen is found in simplicity & tranquility, in a sense of the all embracing harmony of things. There are only two ways to live our life. One is as if nothing is a miracle. The other is as if everything is a miracle” – Zen masters.

Love & compassion are like two peas in a pod. As an incredible human emotion, Compassion is a gentle, welcoming light, capable of dissolving all inequalities, biases & barriers, drawing hearts closer together. Wally Santos invites us to dive deep into the essence of this transformative emotion, which transcends mere sympathy. It beautifully manifests as acts of generosity, understanding, love & care. More than just a simple gesture, compassion is a way of being, a knowing of the spirit that seeks to truly recognise another, offering solace & joy.

In a society that often values individualism, Compassion emerges as an urgent call to reconnect & appreciate our shared humanity. Practicing compassion makes us more whole, more present, more human & more happy. Compassion invites us to cultivate an open heart, despite challenges. By learning to walk alongside others with empathy, compassion is one of the greatest gifts we can give & receive.
