Sexual awareness was taught as formal education. Kamasutra, a beautiful book on sacred sexuality is worth a read (4th century BCE). Imaginations were usually carved as erotic motifs on walls. Scintillating, sensuous poetry in stone.
Best examples are sculptures at Sun Temple at Konark, paintings of heavenly maidens at rock-cut caves of Ajanta (2nd century BCE), Ellora (5th century). Best preserved graphic examples of erotic temple art can be found at Khajuraho clusters. Built by Chandela dynasty (950 century). 22/85 original temples remain.
Temples were places of worship, stimulating yin/yang roles, fine arts including celestial, sensitive love-making expressions. Depictions of sexual imagery were considered natural divine omens representing new playful beginnings, fertility, creativity, harmony, power. Worship was done in 2 forms. With outer radiance (Agni), inner fire (Tapa).
